Project Overview

We have completed this investment project to help reduce the risk of future bursts on the strategic rising sewer main running between Renfrew and the Shieldhall Wastewater Treatment Works in Glasgow.

The project has been delivered by our alliance partners Caledonia Water Alliance.

Kings Inch Road Sewer Upgrade

King's Inch Burst

There have been a number of bursts over recent months.

What We Have Done

Since 2024, almost two kilometres of the sewer main has been relined across three phases, helping to improve resilience, reduce the risk of future bursts and lessen disruption for customers.

Relining is a specialised technique which enables renewal of the existing sewer pipe with a new inner wall. This technique is an innovative way of making the pipe ‘like new’ and prolonging the working life of the sewer.

Teams were required to dig access points over the existing pipe that were close to properties, which made the project more challenging. The relining technique chosen avoided digging up nearly 2km of King's Inch Road which would have required road closures and extended the length of the project.

The new lining has been installed and pressure testing of the newly lined pipe has been successfully completed. It is now carrying the high pressure flows of wastewater.

The temporary overland pipeline has been dismantled and a specialist landscaping contractor is carrying out the reinstatement of the ground at the access pits.

We are extremely grateful for the patience, understanding and cooperation of everyone impacted while our teams were on site carrying out these essential works for the benefit of the community.

The work was delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) and their specialist contractors Environmental Techniques.

Why We Have Done It

This section of sewer was prone to bursts because of its age and condition. A number of incidents caused disruption to local residents and saw the Paterson Park Association allotments flooded several times in a matter of months.

We fast-tracked the project to address the vulnerability of the network and to protect the environment and customers

Now complete, the works will provide improved resilience and drastically reduce the chance of future bursts along the relined section.
