Pittenweem Sewer Flooding Investment

Project Overview
We are improving the sewer network in Pittenweem to help prevent sewer flooding and protect the local environment.
Working in phases we are installing new pipework, sea outfalls, spill chambers and screens at storm overflows.

What We Are Doing
We are working to alleviate flooding in three main areas of Pittenweem - West Shore, East Shore and West Pittenweem.
Work on East Shore was completed early in 2025 with upgrades to a storm overflow and new sea outfall constructed.
Similar work is planned for West Shore where the existing sea outfall will be extended to below the lowest level of the tide when the tidal range is at its greatest.
There are known flooding issues in the Western area of Pittenweem. We are currently considering several options, including the diversion of excess storm water from the Sandycraig estate.
Why We Are Doing It
Pittenweem has been prone to sewer flooding during heavy rain for many years.
The £8million investment will help alleviate the risk of flooding and make a real difference to households that have been affected in the past.
Update - December 2025
A planning application has been submitted for the second phase of works to tackle the sewer flooding that has affected the village over many years.
A new screened storm overflow will be constructed beneath the West Shore harbour wall and a new, bigger and buried sea outfall installed.
Part of the seawall will be dismantled brick by brick and reassembled once the work has been completed. This phase of the project presents significant challenges given the West Shore is more exposed to the weather and sea conditions than East Shore.
Everything will be done to minimise disruption, however some timings will be weather dependent, particularly when dictated by waves and the tide.
We are grateful for the patience and understanding shown by the community and we look forward to working with them again.
